Thăng Long Bridge in Hanoi

Thăng Long Bridge crosses the Red River at km6 + 300 location on Ring Road No. 3, linking Đông Anh district with Bắc Từ Liêm district of Hanoi city. The bridge is considered the work of century symbolizing the friendship of Vietnam and the Soviet Union. Bridge’s length is 3,250m.

From 1974 to 1977 the project was carried out by Chinese experts and from 1978 to 1982 it was completed with the technical and technological assistance of Soviet experts. The bridge is said to resemble Changjiang Bridge (Wuhan, China) in terms of design. Construction of the bridge started on November 26, 1974 and officially inaugurated on May 09, 1985 after 11 years of construction.

The bridge was completed step by step, then it officially connected the Northern and Southern banks of Red River on November 18, 1983. On January 1984, the bridge was technically opened to traffic and in June 1984, a railway of 1m-wide was opened to traffic. The whole bridge was opened to traffic on May 09, 1985.

Thăng Long Bridge was built to increase the ability of connecting Hanoi to the other side of the Red River, which had been formerly connected only by Long Biên overloaded bridge. The bridge started in Vẽ village, also known as Kẻ Vẽ village, now is Đông Ngạc ward of Bắc Từ Liêm district, Hanoi.

Thăng Long Bridge construction site covers 192 hectares in eight communes of Đông Anh and Từ Liêm districts, and the combined enterprise model, as its literary, specifically served the bridge construction process, was an extremely new concept to bridge construction at that time.

As time goes by, many new bridges have been built across the Red River to meet the needs of people, but Thăng Long Bridge still has its own beauty with its function for connecting the capital with Nội Bài International Airport, an important gateway for international visitors to Hanoi and northern provinces of Vietnam.
