In 1973, President Fidel Castro of Cuba made a historic visit to Vietnam amidst the country’s unification struggle entering its fiercest stage. He decided to give Vietnam one of the most important economic projects named Thắng Lợi Hotel, located in West Lake area, Hanoi. The project was built on a campus with a total area of 46,740m2.

At the time, there were five hotels in Hanoi, all of which were built between 1910 and 1920 in the French colonial period, which consist relatively small number of rooms for organizing international events. By this reason, Thắng Lợi Hotel had been urgently completed with the desire to welcome international delegations to visit Vietnam on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

In 1975, came the final stage the construction of Thắng Lợi Hotel. After being completed, the hotel reminded people of the image of wooden-frame house on stilts. With 156 rooms, this was considered the largest hotel in Northern Vietnam at that time. To build this Hotel, many Cuban delegations had been sent to Vietnam including engineers, architects and workers, while there were about 100 Vietnamese involved in construction process. The work was designed by famous Cuban architect Nicolás Quintana.
